We discovered the awkward truth behind DLNA when testing Sony's Home Server HS1. DLNA only stipulates that devices support MPEG2 video, with MPEG4 and H.264 formats optional extras. Most videos are encoded in MPEG4 these days and our test included MPEG4s, motion JPEGs (common on digital cameras) and an H.264 high-definition movie. The Home Server HS1 refused to stream these files to the Playstation 3, only offering the PS3 a selection of older MPEG1 and MPEG2 files. Worse still, it's not compatible with the Xbox 360. Apparently Sony is discussing an update, but for now the HS1 is not a credible video Nas, which is a shame, as its design and connectivity are excellent.
