Amd Spins Off Fabs And Launches Chips

AMD has finally spun off its manufacturing operations and announced a raft of new chips. Its chips will be made by a new entity called the Foundry Company following a deal with the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) and venture capital firm Mubadala Development Company. AMD retains a controlling share. It has also launched two new 40nm graphics processors, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4860 and 4830, which it said would redefine mobile PC entertainment. Earlier it revealed a six-core Opteron chip, codenamed Istanbul, due to be launched later this year. The processor can be used as a slot-in replacement for Opterons on systems with two or four sockets.
