Shops to offers bins for greener battery disposal

Regulations that rnallow consumers to dispose of spent batteries in shops free of charge come into effect from 1 February.rnThe EU Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations require retailers who sell more than 32kg of portable batteries a year, which equates to around one pack of four AA batteries a day, to place collection bins in store.rnAll types of portable batteries, including rechargeables, from all kinds of products such as hearing aids, mobile phones and laptops, can be disposed of this way; even if they were not bought from the shop they are taken to.
