This works because the messages are stored by remote server PCs that belong to the webmail provider. The risk of losing stuff due to a fault is small because companies that provide webmail services are generally large, well-organised affairs with reliable backup procedures of their own. However, they are not infallible. Tens of thousands of users of Google's Gmail service recently discovered that their messages and contacts have disappeared.
