The Sony Xperia Tipo is the first low cost Android 4 smartphone to arrive in the UK. This model costs just £110 without a contract. That price puts it on a par with the Motorola MotosmartXT389 (below) but, although the two smartphones share similar specifications, the Xperia Tipo's more recent version of Android makes it instantly more appealing. The Tipo is small for a smartphone, thanks in part to its 3.2 in screen but its chubby shape makes it easy to hold. Although the case is plastic, build quality is of high standard but prising off the back with a fingernail to get at the battery and micro SD card slots is fiddly. Mercifully, the Xperia Tipo's touch-sensitive Android buttons are the easy- to-see backlit type that sit on the black bezel below the screen.
