How do I rescue video recordings from my broken camcorder?

We have a Sony Handycam DCR-SR58E that's not recognised by our computer, so we are unable to transfer the recordings. We have tried replacement cables and different computers. We even took it to a local dealer who couldn't make it work and advised us that it's definitely a problem with the camcorder which could be expensive to repair. Is there any way to rescue the videos stored in the camcorder?
