Phone scammers use fake caller IDs to steal your money

Fraudsters have made millions of pounds by using fake phone numbers that mimic those used by banks, phone companies and other legitimate organisations. The practice, known as "number spoofing", has been going on for years, but Financial Fraud Action UK (FFA UK) has reported a marked increase in the activity in recent weeks. The scam is hard to detect because the number you see on your screen when called by the fraudsters is that of an actual organisation - it may even be a number that's already saved on your phone. According to Ofcom, criminals are using software to create these fake caller IDs.
