Guessing passwords as easy as ABC

Despite constant warnings to avoid using obvious passwords, many people are failing to heed the advice, according to security researchers. Dr Jeff Yan (pictured) from Lancaster University studied user data, including information hacked from Yahoo accounts in 2012, and found that 123456', 'qwerty' and 'abc123' were among the most common passwords - as indeed was 'password' (see box left). Other popular passwords combined the individual's name, age or birthday.
