Q I'm planning to replace my desktop PC, and I see most of the companies you recommend offer a combination of SSD and hard drive. I know SSDs are faster and hard drives give you more space, but ideally what size for each would you suggest? Aisha Marsden A Your startup drive - with Windows installed on it -should be an SSD, so the whole system will benefit from its speed. The slowest SSDs, installed on the SATA interface, read about 400-500 megabytes per second (MB/s), roughly four times faster than a hard drive. Ideally, get an NVMe SSD on the M.2 interface: speeds vary from 1000-1500MB/S to twice that, so check the options. Options. A 256GB SSD will be enough for Windows and quite a few programs, but 512GB is more comfortable, especially if you want to keep some files on this drive for quick access. A 1TB SSD - from around £100, or £200 for NVMe - is a simple solution if that's enough for all your stuff; check your current PC to judge. Otherwise, get a smaller SSD plus a 2TB hard drive. Serious video editors, for whom fast file access is crucial, will want a second NVMe SSD.
