In the run-up to the General Election last month, Labour announced a bold plan to provide free broadband to every home and business in the UK. By nationalising Openreach (the subsidiary of BT that maintains the UK's broadband infrastructure) and embarking on a £20 billion upgrade, it said it would provide high-speed, full-fibre broadband across the country by 2030.
