One of the unwritten rules of the tech industry is that imaging hardware always needs higher resolution. The cameras on the backs of smartphones are no exception, and while their average spec has risen steadily from a couple of megapixels to 12 or so, the top end has disappeared into the stratosphere. We've seen a few phones with 48 megapixels, including the OnePlus 7 Pro (see our review. Issue 558) and the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom (Issue 561, page 26). Now makers including Xiaomi have announced 64-megapixel sensors.
