The notification area (to the left of the clock and sometimes referred to as the system tray) can soon get cluttered with icons for programs running in the background. To hide any icon, click and hold it, then drag upwards into the hidden overflow box that appears.Alternatively, to edit which taskbar icons are displayed (including any programs that aren't currently running), right-click an empty section of the taskbar, select 'Taskbar settings', scroll down to the 'Notification area' section then click 'Select which icons appear on the taskbar'. Any that are switched off will be hidden when active. To display all icons in the notification area regardless of their setting, switch the 'Always show allicons...' option at the top to On (see screenshot below left).
