This paper reports the compressive behavior of CFRP-confined partially encased concrete columns under axial loading. Nine CFRP-confined partially encased concrete columns and three partially encased concrete columns are axially tested. The failure modes, load versus displacement relationship, axial bearing capacity, ductility and initial stiffness are presented and analyzed. The results show that CFRP-confined partially encased concrete columns present a better mechanical performance than those without CFRP sheets confining (i.e. partially encased concrete columns). CFRP-confined partially encased concrete columns are eventually failed due to the local buckling of steel flange with rupture of CFRP sheet or without rupture of CFRP sheet. The ductility and axial bearing capacity of columns can be improved with increasing number of CFRP sheet layers. A simplified design formula of CFRP-confined partially encased concrete columns is proposed, which can satisfactorily agree with the test results.
