The University of Aberdeen is in its sixth century; it was founded in 1495-a mere three years after Columbus sailed to the Americas. 500 years later, in July 2005, the university launched an international competition for a new library asking for two things: first, that the building form a new focus for the campus as a whole and, second, that the design consider the expanded role of the library in the 21st century. The £55.5 million ($96.4 million US) library set to open in 2010 is part of the University of Aberdeen's ten-year investment in capital development totalling £228 million.
