Reliving the Prehistoric Symbolically

As home to a botanically diverse and ecologically important collection of over 7500 varieties of plants representing the world's continents, the 55-acre San Francisco Botanical Garden is located in Golden Gate Park, near Herzog and de Meuron's M. H. de Young Museum and Renzo Piano's recent California Academy of Sciences building. Earlier this year, the Botanical Garden Society, which co-manages the Garden with the City of San Francisco, decided to sponsor an open international competition to generate a design solution that effectively communicates the historical significance of Gondwana in relation to the evolution andrncurrent horticultural communities of the Southern Hemisphere. As competition adviser, I was asked to develop a process, and to serve as the coordinator of the competition.
