Everybody these days wants an art museum. More civic than convention centers and more useful than stadiums, more democratic than skyscrapers and more public than grand public buildings, art museums are the new chess piece of choice in the game of attracting attention, investment and all the other things that are meant to make a city great. After two decades of arguing in vain that cultural facilities have the highest economic multiplier of any urban investment, art consultants now accept invitations from around the world to help shape such artistic behemoths. It was Bilbao that finally focussed the world's attention on the possibility, but before that it was the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Berlin's Nationalgallerie, or even the Dallas Arts District, to name just a few, that proved that every dollar spent on such structures brought in a flood of visitors, as well as producing a whole new image for the city.
