Journalism needs to be rethought. As a social institution, it faces more challenges than at the beginning of the 21st Century, such as the pressure of the business logic, the loss of credibility, or the lack of engagement of young citizens. For at least a couple of decades, critical scholars and professionals have claimed that media should primarily focus on their social responsibility: informing citizens for a healthier democracy. These proposals usually tend to refer to an abstract past where journalism was somehow better. The book edited by Barbie Zelizer is a refreshing voice in this debate. It proposes to look at current trends in journalism as symptoms of diversity and opportunities to rethink the profession.
