Cultural Meanings of News

After first crafting a reader on the social meanings of news (Sage, 1997), Dan Berkowitz has now published an additional collection of texts on the cultural meanings of news. Both volumes contain a set of journalism studies classics -the must-reads for students entering the discipline. As such they are excellent introductions into studying the production - or, perhaps better, construction -of news and the cultural dimensions of journalism and news texts. Assigning this new reader next to a guiding textbook in an introductory journalism studies course would offer undergraduate students valuable insights into scholarship on news culture. This well-thought-out compilation can also serve as a guide for more advanced scholars.
