The ironic spectator: Solidarity in the age of post-human itarian ism

It might be premature to identify something as grand and deliberate as a 'moral turn' in the analysis of the media. But it is possible to identify a constellation of concerns focusing on how the media influence - or don't - the relationship between spectators and the suffering others who are shown on the screen or page. The concerns focus on questions of humanitarianism, cosmopolitanism and, most broadly, morality and ethics. The constellation comprises contributions from a number of fields: media studies, communication studies, cultural studies, sociology, political theory, philosophy.
