In a sweeping history of the acceleration of time and its attendant political culture from the Industrial Revolution's "tick-tock" of the clock to the inaudible digital beep of the network nanosecond, Robert Hassan traces what he considers a "revolutionary" transformation in the social construction and experience of time. This "revolution" needs to be qualified from the outset. Hassan proclaims he is not a theorist of any sort of vogue "ove-rhyping banter." Rather he argues these changes are neither "explosive" or "shattering" but a process open to human intervention and slow revolutionary change (p. 63). In The Chronoscopic Society: Globalization, Time and Knowledge in the Network Economy, Hassan deploys seventy-five theorists in 176 pages to argue that the government of the clock has been superceded by the dominance of the digital—with fundamental implications for the health of democracy, the flourishing of critical faculties within the academy, and the processes of communication that are the life-blood of social movements and necessary political action.
