摘要

Lianne McTavish's analysis of obstetrical treatises in Childbirth and the Display of Authority in Early Modern France provides a unique and rich perspective to the historical understanding of birth and midwifery in early modern Europe. Taking an interdisciplinary approach by invoking theories in feminist studies of reproduction, studies in visual culture, and art history, McTavish reveals that these treatises, rather than mere instructional texts, are sites of contestations of meaning and medical authority in early modern France. She locates the treatises in a particular historical and social period, during which men (as surgeon-midwives and physicians) were beginning to enter into the female-dominated realm of childbirth. Instead of resorting to the conventional understanding of this transition in the context of a "gender war", in which it is argued that male practitioners drove out the female midwives, McTavish illuminates the complexities and contradictions present in the treatises to produce a more nuanced analysis of how male practitioners struggled to gain access to the birthing chamber. She demonstrates in her detailed study of the written accounts of births, engraved portraits of female and male midwives, and diagrams of the maternal body and the unborn found in the obstetrical treatises that men's entry into a female-dominated field was wrought with professional dangers for the men. McTavish excavates these dangers and anxieties in metaphors and narratives of seeing and being on display found in the treatises and analyzes them vis-a-vis politics of professionalism and gender.
