摘要

Public radio in America, with nearly 30 million listeners, has become a significant phenomenon, and after 30 years of service, it justifies serious historical treatment, which Michael P. McCauley ably provides. To begin NPR: The Trials and Triumphs of National Public Radio, McCauley describes some of the emotional investments that listeners make in NPR programs and states his purpose for the book: "to understand why NPR holds such powerful appeal for certain listeners." (p. 2) He recounts his own professional and graduate school experience with radio, how NPR is a contested institution, and how it compares with public television and the BBC in the context of the historical development of commercial and noncommercial broadcasting in the U.S.
