BOOK REVIEW: CULTURES IN ORBIT: SATELLITES AND THE TELEVISUAL

Cultures in Orbit: Satellites and the Televisual, by Lisa Parks, is a fascinating look at satellites and satellite television from the viewpoint of five distinct applications, in an effort to help us understand "how particular satellite uses have reconfigured the meanings, practices, and potentials of the televisual" (p. 1). Parks refers to the televisual as "different structures of the imaginary and/or epistemological structures that have radiated from and taken shape around the medium over its history. The televisual is a particular set of knowledge practices or ways of seeing and knowing the world that are not necessarily bound to television industries" (p. 12).
