摘要

Following up on our special section on audience reception in volume 9 (see Morley 2006; Barker 2006; Press 2006), this issue responds to some of the issues raised in that section. Michelle poses a potential solution to the problem of the lack of cumulative knowledge in the field that both Barker and Morley decried in that forum. She offers a comprehensive review and analysis of several decades of audience reception literature in what is an unusually long article, but one we felt was useful to present in its entirety, particularly because this summary is the precursor to an admirably ambitious attempt to systematize the current categories of our analysis in a vast variety of audience research. Her article presents excellent distinctions that get at the range of different questions many of us in this field have been asking.
