So what if the word transgender, which didn't achieve its current critical connotations until the early 1990s, was never mentioned a quarter century ago at the 1982 Barnard Conference on Women, and if related concepts of transvestism and transsexualism were muttered only in passing? Whether the conference participants realized it then or not (and chances are they did not), the debates that reverberated there shook open spaces within feminist discourse, scholarship, and community formation that allowed transgender feminism to expand and grow in the decades yet to come.
