The Social Media Agon as Differencing Machine: A Materialist Feminist Perspective

The purpose of this article is to explore French materialist and Marxist feminist theories of social reproduction as a basis for understanding how social differences relate to the extreme right's aggressive media presence. Such perspectives illuminate the inseparability of social inequalities from capitalism and, in conjunction with feminist and queer theory, how cultural categories gain material momentum and change over time. The analysis investigates the motives behind two examples of online violence toward feminists of color: the harassment of Linda Sarsour and the distributed denial of service attacks on the official website of #BlackLivesMatter.
