Graham Dixon-Lewis, 1922-2010

Graham Dixon-Lewis, FRS died on his way from work on 5 August 2010. Born in 1922 and a pupil at Newport High School in Wales, Graham entered Jesus College, Oxford, in 1940, as a State Scholar and Welsh Foundation Scholar to read Chemistry and he graduated in 1944. He experienced an early introduction to flame propagation through trying to suppress it, in a war-time undergraduate project on the prevention of muzzle flash from guns. He remained at Oxford for DPhil research on the oxidation of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, under the supervision of Jack Linnett. This fired him with the idea of measuring the microstructure of premixed flames as a means of studying high temperature reaction kinetics, free from the influence of walls.
