Use of chitin and its derivatives in textile processing

The use of renewable natural resources as textile auxiliaries in textile processing is increasing in importance. Renewable resources based on carbohydrates such as cellulose and starch are now well accepted. Compared to this, the use of chitin, which after cellulose is next in biological production per year, has not been adequately studied. The possibility of application of chitosan (poly 2 aminoglucan) and its derivatives depends on their polyelectrolyte character. The effectiveness of chitosan as polycation (amino or ammonium group depending on pH) for improving the fastness of direct dyeings has been studied to enable replacement of cationic synthetic polymers by this biocompatible product.
