Effect of pretreatments on properties of Tencel fabric and its blends

Physical properties and other characteristics of alkali treated, bleached and mercerised Tencel fabric have been studied. It was observed that alkali concentration of 1 to 4% (o.w.f.) treatment does not affect cuprammonium fluidity and tensile or tear strength of the fabric. Tencel fabric treated with 1 to 2% alkali (o.w.f.) on bleaching did not show much deterioration in tensile and tear strength as well as fluidity values. However, beyond 2% alkali concentration followed by bleaching, there was considerable decrease in tear strength. Subsequently, both bleached and alkali treatment Tencel fabrics were mercerised. It was found that mercerisation did not bring about any change in fluidity and tensile or tear strength. After each stage of treatment, fabric was dyed with bifunctional reactive dyes of different type. Both alkali treated and bleached fabric showed more or less the same colour value whereas alkali-treated fabric followed by mercerisation showed higher colour value as compared with the corresponding values for unmercerised fabric.
