Chemical processing of silk

The pretreatment of silk consists of two stages depending on the quality requirements: 1. Degumming i.e. Desizing and boiling off 2. Bleaching In the pretreatment stage not only the gum sericin must be completely removed but also the accompanying impurities such as fats, oils, waxes, natural pigments and mineral components. Some qualities where starch is used as a sizing component must also be removed completely.
