The use, application and relevance of instrumental colour measurement

The importance of returning to basics in optimising dyehouse productivity has been emphasised in a previous Colourage publication "Back 2 Basics". This paper returns to, and expands upon, that theme; and concentrates specifically on the careful use of colour science as a management tool in pursuance of optimised "Right First Time" production. Herein is considered the use of colour science techniques in the field of textile dyeing. It is not a theoretical paper based on colour physics, but rather a practical observation of how basic colour measurement techniques are used in bulk situations. The principles discussed within apply to all forms of textile dyeing, but all practical experience related in the case studies offered refer to the application of reactive dyes to cellulose by exhaust and continuous application.
