In the recent past, organic molecules particularly colorants exhibiting strong nonlinear optical behavior have received considerable interest because of their applicability in a variety of optical devices. Nonlinear optical behavior of organic molecules arises out of the ability of molecules to absorb more than one photon simultaneously. The ability of an organic molecule to simultaneously absorb two or more photons and be promoted to one of its excited states has recently attracted much interest due to its applicability in fields such as optical limiting, upconverted lasing, laser scanning fluorescence microscopy, and microfabrication. Organic two-photon induced fluorescent (TPIF) materials have been widely studied recently for this reason. This interest stems from various high end technical applications that potentially can be reali2ed using organic materials, such as three-dimensional optical storage, two-photon fluorescence excitation microscopy, two-photon optical power limiting, two-photon upconverted lasing, and photodynamic therapy.
