Dyes as functional materials

Interaction of light (electromagnetic radiation) with materials (particularly dyes) have revealed the kinds of functions other than providing the aesthetic surface. Developments in electronics and bioelectronics have opened up an array of novel applications of colorants (dyes and pigments), and they are: 1. Electroluminescent materials 2. Photochromic, thermochromic, and piezochromic materials 3. Imaging materials (carbonless copying paper, inkjet printing) 4. Non-linear Optical materials (Second and Third harmonic generation) 5. Organic photoconductors (including Dye Sensitised Solar Cells) 6. Materials in Optical recording media (CD-R, DVD-R) 7. Photosensitizers (Photography, Initiators) 8. Biomedical Applications (Diagnostics, Photodynamic therapy).
