Evaluation of tieing techniques of bandhani (tie & dye) work for simplification

For simplification of tieing techniques of bandhani work (tie & dye) cotton fabric was selected such as mulmul, poplin and grey (chickni). Sewing thread & twine thread was used as tieing materials. Different tieing techniques were selected namely spot, object, oval, circle in circle, spider web, marble, and strip, and envelop triangular, square and stitching. Each method of bandhani tied tightly separately with sewing & twine thread individually on mulmul, grey and poplin. Dyed in direct dye, washed, dried, untie thread & developed patterns were pressed. Evaluation of obtained patterns of bandhani work was carried out by considering various tieing factors such as amount of thread, time, type of thread and area to be covered with thread for tieing, which tieing method required less time and thread, sharpness, clearance, attractiveness and brightness. As per the results it was found that mulmul fabric was excellent for bandhani work. Poplin & grey fabrics of lower fabric count and thin were good for tie & dye. For one spot tieing method 4 to 5 inches of thread and 30 seconds to 1 -minute time was needed. 1 to 4 meters of thread & 3 to 10 minutes time was required for tieing of object, strip, circle in circle, triangular, envelop square, marble, stitching and spider web tieing techniques.0.25 to 1.5 cm area to be covered with thread for tieing was found to be suitable for producing delicate and attractive design. Tieing techniques was simplified by Mulmul fabric folded in four layers and poplin, grey fabric folded in double layers, edges of folded layer were stitched & tied. Use of head pins for spot tieing gives excellent design of spot. Utilization of stiff stick or rod was found to be easy to hold in fabric for tieing (in zigzag manner for spider web, strips, and circle), continuous tieing without breaking or cutting thread from one spot to another spot .The cost of sewing thread of 300 meters was low i.e. Rs 2/- as compared to twine thread of 300 meters costing Rs 12/-. Simplification process adopted for bandhani work that reduces effort of tieing and cost.
