Before you step inside The Edwardian Needle, you know that this store is going to be a unique experience. You turn off the Garden State Parkway in Bloomfield, New Jersey, into an old industrial park, which seems an unusual place to find a needlework shop. Unusual, that is, until you learn that these 120-year-old industrial buildings once housed Oakes Mills, which manufactured wool for Union Army and New York City Police uniforms. And when you do walk into The Edwardian Needle, you are treated to immaculately stocked merchandise, threads and ribbon of every color hanging on the walls and placed neatly in bins and drawers, and stitched models of various styles hung on the walls. There is a canvas and linen room for storing and cutting fabric,.and a large classroom in the back of the shop, which occupies about half the total square footage. Technique and design books, as well as leaflets, are on display throughout the store. Accessories are up near the front in glass cases, and impulse items are stocked near the register.
