As the Christmas selling season winds down, a sadness descends on the industry. Manufacturers, while excitedly gearing up for HIA, know that there will be typical after-Christmas drop-off of reorders of basic goods. Retailers, while relieved to get through yet another crazy fourth quarter, grouchily are paying off their dating orders, knowing the money train has reached the station. This all contributes to the long-held belief that the month after Christmas is a time to clean up and haphazardly fill in the gaping holes left by the departure of Christmas, while focusing on the next season of Christmas buying and upcoming trade shows. The sales will drop off significantly, and there isn't much that can be done about it. Or is there?
