The over-the-counter fabric business can best be described as a great big pie, a pie that started out whole and over the years is served up in slices. One slice goes for quilting; others for home decorating, craft projects, fashion, special occasion and bridal. The good news is that the fashion, special occasion and bridal slices continue to entice consumers, making them deliciously profitable for many retailers. As the president of a buying service catering to retailers and small manufacturing businesses, I can report that requests for special occasion fabrics, particularly for bridal and after five fabrics, are frequent and exceed all other categories. Yet in practice, there is a very fine line between the fashion apparel and special occasion categories.
