COOL New York & Knitting 101

In January, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg kicked off a citywide program called COOL New York, a celebration of City Arts & Parks, sponsored in conjunction with the Parks & Recreation Department and all of the city museums. The Craft Yarn Council of America (CYCA) was asked to present a series of free beginner's knitting classes called Knitting 101 at three recreation centers. Needless to say, CYCA recognized an opportunity to reach and teach more people about yarn. Accordingly, Mary Colucci, CYCA public relations manager, organized six weeks of Saturday classes at the three centers: One each in Staten Island, Manhattan and Long Island City (Queens). Each class was three hours long. Locating teachers was the initial challenge, but thanks to help from the Big Apple Knitters, several Long Island guilds and friends, CYCA was able to come up with a good roster.
