Nowadays, the so-called hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are on a seriously high level. In Germany, HAIs cause about twice to three times as many deaths as traffic accidents. Around 4,500 people die each year after suffering from a post-operative wound infection (POD caused by bacteria entering the open wound during the operation.
