Confronting Ethnic Conflict is an analysis of the ways in which third-party intervention has affected the trajectories of conflict in Africa. The book features a comparative analysis of given cases of international intervention in Africa's civil wars - Burundi, Somalia, Sudan, and South Africa - and draws common findings and theoretically informed conclusions. It evaluates the actors and agents in international intervention and whether external military, diplomacy, and development-aid engagement have contributed to the mitigation of Africa's civil wars. The principal theme of the book is the conditions under which international intervention can succeed in preventing ethnic conflicts from escalating into war.
