New state laws allow developers to purchase and redevelop contaminated industrial sites without the high risks or high costs usually associated with environmental cleanups. Here's what engineers need to know about brownfield projects. Many state legislatures have passed laws to spur the redevelopment and revital-ization of brownfield properties— abandoned sites that are or may be contaminated—in urban and suburban areas throughout the country. The federal government and state governments recognize the problems caused by urban flight (including sprawl, erosion of infrastructure and a loss of open spaces) and support laws to address these issues.
