The McArthur Baths public swimming pool complex is situated on the Port Elizabeth beachfront. The original venue was constructed as an ice rink but was converted to a swimming pool complex in the 1970s and consisted of three pools. The first was a large seawater pool, originally fed by wave action over the low sea-facing wall. However, since the construction of the harbour breakwater, the adjacent Kings Beach had, over the years, expanded and pushed the sea back from the wall, thus diminishing circulation of the pool water so that the quality of the water had deteriorated. The second large pool was a conventional freshwater swimming pool and the third and smallest was a kiddies' pool with two stainless steel water slides.
