By devising a seismic retrofit strategy that provides an entirely new lateral load path while remaining hidden from view, engineers have preserved the Bixby Creek Bridge in Big Sur, one of the most recognizable bridges on the West Coast. By the mid-1930s the Bridge Department of the California Division of Highways had probably built more concrete arches than any other engineering organization in the nation. Completing the last leg of Highway 1 through Big Sur placed demands on the expertise of all their engineers.
