Bremerton, Washington—a city on Puget Sound that receives up to 50 in. (1,270 mm) of rain a year—has been redesigning its sewer since the early 1990s to prevent it from overflowing during storms. Nearly a decade later, the city could reach its goal with the help of an innovative solution: one of the first stand-alone wet-weather treatment facilities using high-rate clarification (HRC) and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection.
