Given the number of people in the United States who have lost their homes to foreclosure or are in danger of doing so and the overall economic malaise afflicting the country and the world, managing growth may seem very much a nonissue at the moment. But Managing Growth in America's Communities has an important message even in tough times, namely, that if we want our communities to remain livable for the long term we must pay close attention to how those communities grow. Since all but the gloomiest prognostica-tors assume that the United States will emerge from this recession in the not-too-distant future, it is important that the lessons learned and the progress made in recent years not be forgotten when things turn around.
