WHEN THE DESIGN team began drafting plans for the visitor center at the new Brockholes nature reserve, in northwest England, two factors loomed large. The first was that nearly the entire 166-acre site was in a floodplain; the second was that the purpose of the center would be to help visitors connect with the surrounding habitat. To ensure that the facility would be able to survive a flood and accomplish the intended goals, the design team drew inspiration from the £ marsh houses in Iraq in devising an un- t usual floating structure.
