Urbanization Takes a Toll on the Environment

A new report reveals that urbanization not only is increasing but also to a growing extent is straining the world's ecology. Karen C. Seto, Ph.D., a professor at Yale University's School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, points out in a paper recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that in 2008, for the first time, more than half of the world's population lived in towns and cities and that the footprint of urbanized areas was growing to accommodate this change.
