摘要

The Rocks Village Bridge is a historically important six-span truss bridge that in carrying Main Street over the Merrimack River in Massachusetts connects the communities of Haverhill and West Newbury. As the oldest movable bridge in the inventory of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), the two-lane structure includes the only remaining manually operated swing span in the state. Because the bridge's spans were constructed in three different periods, nearly every span has a unique framing style or span arrangement. The oldest spans, namely, the rim-bearing swing span and the adjacent west approach span, were built by the Boston Bridge Works in 1883- One of the earliest known surviving works of this nationally significant bridge-building company from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Rocks Village Bridge also features one of the state's earliest riveted metal trusses.
