Denver Water Hires Contractor far Initial Work on Gross Reservoir Expansion

IN JULY, DENVER WATER took the next step in its bold effort to triple the size of its 42,000 acre-ft Gross Reservoir, awarding a two-year, $4.5-million planning and precon-struction contract to Kiewit Barnard, a joint venture comprising the Kiewit Corp., of Omaha, Nebraska, and the Barnard Construction Company Inc., of Bozeman, Montana. The companies are now part of Denver Water's ambitious $464-million project to raise Gross Reservoir's dam by more than 130 ft. Upon completion, the 471 ft tall structure will be the tallest dam in Colorado, the tallest dam in the United States made of roller-compacted concrete (RCC), and the tallest dam in the world to be raised by RCC.
