HAVING WORKED for the American Bridge Company in my early career, I found the article on the new Goethals Bridge ("Originality Built In," June 2019, pages 64-73) quite interesting. However, it seemingly lacked detail on the makeup of the cables, which appear to be steel pipes. I would like to know what makes up the cables and have more clarity on the anchorages.The stay cables consist of multiple cold-drawn, uncoated steel wire strands, each 0.62 in. in diameter, manufactured to ASTM A416, low-relaxation, seven-wire strand specifications. For corrosion protection, each seven-wire strand is encased in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sheathing. Within the sheathing, the interstitial space between the individual wires is filled with a corrosion-inhibiting grease. The entire bundle of strands that form the individual stay cables are housed within an HDPE stay pipe.
